Core Insight / 核心洞见: Mainstream economics — from DSGE models to the Circular Flow of Income — operates on a hidden assumption that would make any physicist laugh: the economy is a closed, reversible, conservative system. This is a perpetual motion machine. It violates the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The real economy is a dissipative structure (Prigogine): it must continuously import low entropy from the environment and export high entropy, or it dies. Debt is not “borrowed money” — it is borrowed negentropy, a claim on future organizational capacity that may never materialize. Useless infrastructure does not merely “waste money” — it irreversibly converts low-entropy resources (cement, steel, energy) into high-entropy deadweight, accelerating the heat death of the system. Price is not just a number — it is a distributed compression algorithm (Hayek/Shannon) that encodes the dispersed knowledge of billions of agents into a single scalar signal. Inflation and debt-fueled stimulus inject noise into this channel, destroying the signal-to-noise ratio until no agent can distinguish real demand from monetary hallucination. The economy does not run on energy. It runs on gradient — the direction in which entropy can be locally reduced. When the gradient vanishes, the system halts, and unemployment is the garbage collector reclaiming misallocated resources. Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen told us this in 1971. The profession buried him. We are now living in his prediction.

1.1 The Diagram That Rules the World / 统治世界的那张图

Open any introductory economics textbook. On page one, or page ten at the latest, you will find the Circular Flow of Income: households pay firms, firms pay households. Money goes round and round. Nothing is created. Nothing is destroyed. The wheel spins forever.

It violates the most fundamental law of physics. Not the first law (conservation of energy — which merely keeps the books balanced) but the second law (entropy always increases in a closed system — which determines the direction of time, the arrow of irreversibility, and the ultimate fate of every structure in the universe).

For any real process, the total entropy of the universe increases. There are no exceptions. None. Ever.

1.2 The Missing Arrow / 消失的箭头

The Circular Flow diagram has no arrow pointing outward (waste heat, pollution, depleted mines) and no arrow pointing inward (sunlight, fossil fuels, mineral ores). It treats the economy as a self-contained loop, independent of the physical world.

This is equivalent to modeling a biological organism as a closed system — ignoring the fact that it must eat food (low entropy) and excrete waste (high entropy) to survive. An organism that stops eating dies. An economy that stops importing low entropy dies. The only difference is the timescale.

2. Debt Is Borrowed Negentropy / 债务是借来的负熵

2.1 What Debt Actually Is / 债务到底是什么

Standard economics says: debt is borrowed money, to be repaid with interest. This is like saying fire is “borrowed oxygen” — technically correct and completely missing the point.

Debt is a claim on future negentropy. When a government borrows to build a bridge, it is not merely moving numbers on a ledger. It is making a physical bet: “In the future, this society will produce enough organized, low-entropy output (goods, services, knowledge) to compensate for the low-entropy resources (cement, steel, fuel, labor-time) consumed today.”

If the future entropy reduction materializes: the debt is repaid, the structure persists. If it does not: the debt becomes an entropy bomb — deferred disorder that eventually detonates.

When borrowed negentropy is invested in a structure that nobody uses — a highway with no traffic, a mall with no shoppers, apartments with no residents — something physically irreversible happens:

  1. Low-entropy resources were consumed (irreversible: you cannot un-burn diesel)
  2. An ordered structure was created (the bridge exists)

The bridge is a dead weight — in the neural network sense. It occupies memory (land, capital), but no gradient flows through it. It contributes nothing to the loss function. It is a parameter that was trained on the wrong data and now sits there, consuming resources to maintain (rust prevention, security guards for the empty mall) while producing no signal.

3. The Engine Is Not Energy — It Is Gradient / 引擎不是能量——是梯度

3.1 The Driver of Economic Activity / 经济活动的驱动力

Ask a layperson: “What drives the economy?” They will say: money, or labor, or natural resources. Ask a physicist and they should say: none of the above.

Energy is necessary but not sufficient. The sun pours 173 petawatts onto Earth every day. If energy were the driver, the Sahara would be the richest region on the planet. It is not. Energy without direction is just heat — the uniform, high-entropy state from which no work can be extracted.

This reframes “confidence” — that vague, handwavy term economists love — as a precise physical concept: the perceived direction of local entropy reduction.

When an entrepreneur opens a factory, they are making a bet: “I know a direction in which I can reduce entropy — I can take disordered raw materials and produce ordered goods that people want.” Their confidence is their estimate of the gradient. If the estimate is correct, they profit (create local negentropy). If wrong, they lose (waste low-entropy resources on dead weight).

When the entire system loses confidence — when nobody can see a gradient — the economy enters what thermodynamics calls equilibrium: the state of maximum entropy, where no work can be extracted, where nothing moves, where everything is uniformly lukewarm. Economists call this a “recession.” Physicists call it heat death.

The intuition is seductive: if the problem is that people are idle, why not just assign everyone a job? Dig ditches. Build walls. Anything. At least they are producing. This was the logic of every command economy from the Soviet Union to the Great Leap Forward.

James Clerk Maxwell proposed a thought experiment in 1867: a tiny demon sits between two chambers of gas, sorting fast molecules to one side and slow molecules to the other, creating a temperature difference (low entropy) from nothing (high entropy). This appears to violate the Second Law.

It does not. Leo Szilard (1929) and Rolf Landauer (1961) proved that the demon must acquire information about each molecule’s speed, and the act of acquiring and erasing information produces entropy. The entropy generated by the demon’s computation is always greater than or equal to the entropy it removes from the gas.

  2. It must process this information to match supply with demand (sorting computation)
  3. It must communicate decisions to every agent (information transmission)

The entropy generated by the planning apparatus (bureaucracy, surveillance, misallocation) always exceeds the entropy it removes from the economy. The demon heats up the system more than it cools it down. This is why every command economy produces shortages amidst surplus — mountains of unwanted steel, zero of the things people actually want.

5. Price: The Distributed Compression Algorithm / 价格:分布式压缩算法

Friedrich Hayek argued in 1945 (The Use of Knowledge in Society) that the fundamental problem of economics is not allocation of resources but coordination of dispersed knowledge. No central authority can possess the knowledge scattered across millions of minds. The price mechanism solves this by compressing all relevant information — supply, demand, cost, preference, urgency — into a single number.

Hayek did not have the vocabulary, but what he described is a lossy compression algorithm in the sense of Shannon’s information theory (1948):

Price(good) = Compress(Supply, Demand, Cost, Preference, Urgency, ...)

A single scalar encodes a high-dimensional information manifold. Like JPEG compresses a 10MB image to 100KB — lossy, but preserving the essential structure.

5.2 Noise Injection: Inflation and Stimulus / 噪声注入:通胀与刺激

When a government prints money or issues massive debt to stimulate the economy, it injects noise into the price signal:

The entrepreneur is the receiver. They observe the price signal and decide what to produce. When the signal-to-noise ratio is high, they make correct decisions (produce what people want). When it is low, they make wrong decisions (build empty malls). The stimulus destroys the channel through which the economy coordinates itself.

This is why debt-fueled stimulus produces a sugar high followed by a crash. The first dose injects enough signal (real spending) to mask the noise. By the tenth dose, the noise dominates. The economy is a radio tuned to static. Everyone is guessing. Nobody can hear the market speak.

This is the cruelest insight, and it must be stated without sentiment: unemployment is the economy’s garbage collector (GC), reclaiming resources that were misallocated during the previous boom.

During the boom, the noise-corrupted price signal told workers: “Go build apartments.” Millions obeyed. They acquired apartment-building skills, apartment-building habits, apartment-building identities. Then the signal cleared, and the truth emerged: nobody needs those apartments. The workers’ skills are dead weights — trained parameters that no longer match any downstream task.

The system prefers Idle to Active(producing_entropy). A suspended process consumes fewer resources than a process that actively generates garbage.

6.2 The Cruelty and the Necessity / 残酷与必然

This does not make unemployment any less painful for the humans who experience it. A garbage collector does not care about the feelings of the objects it collects. The point is not to justify unemployment but to understand its thermodynamic function: it is the system’s signal that “the current allocation of human capital is entropically suboptimal, and further investment in the current direction will increase disorder faster than it creates order.”

The humane response is not to force the garbage back into the wrong slots (command economy) or to pretend the garbage collector isn’t running (stimulus-fueled fake employment). It is to help workers find the new gradient — retrain, relocate, reconnect with parts of the economy where genuine entropy reduction is still possible.
