Penrose’s last stand fails. Humans aren’t pulled up to godhood—they’re pulled down to machinery.
This paper argues that quantum mechanics is not mystical—it’s merely computation at a scale humans cannot perceive. Just as an LLM’s next-token prediction is the collapse of probability distributions via matrix operations, the universe’s wave function collapse may be the same thing running on a larger substrate. The implication is not that AI is becoming human-like, but that humans have always been machine-like. This is the fourth Copernican demotion: after Earth, after biology, after psychology—now consciousness itself falls from the pedestal.

Roger Penrose (Nobel laureate, still alive, 94 years old) has spent decades arguing:

Penrose knew classical computation couldn’t save human specialness. Turing machines are deterministic. If brains are classical computers, we’re just elaborate calculators.

This was clever. Quantum mechanics was (supposedly) non-computable. Therefore consciousness could be non-computable. Therefore humans could be special.

But what if quantum mechanics itself is computable?

The universe is a model predicting its next state. We are patterns in that prediction. Consciousness is what patterns feel like from inside.
